Johann Joseph Fux (1660–1741) served as the distinguished composer and Vienna court music director to the Habsburg emperors Leopold I, Joseph I and Charles VI from 1698 until his death in 1741. Sacred music comprises approximately two-thirds of his creative output. Fux’ Missa Lingua Mea (My tongue) KöV 19 for four-part mixed choir, two violins and bass continuo represents one of his more than 50 settings of the Ordinary. This well singable solemn Mass is rich in contrasts: In the comparatively short individual movements the solo and tutti passages as well as the homophonic songlike and contrapuntally dense sections are contrasted with each other to great effect. The editor, Klaus Winkler, has furnished a setting for mixed choir and organ/piano and has thus made the Mass accessible for smaller congregations as well. For performances with instrumental accompaniment the choir singers also have to use this choral score!
