Who does not know the proverbial maxim “No man is an island”? It is derived from the Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions (1624) by the English poet John Donne. This timeless and topical core statement – that no one can exist alone – returns several times in the sometimes archaic church modal-like choral composition by Michael Aschauer. The urgency of the rendered tidings undergoes an ever-increasing intensification dynamically as well as in tempo, intersected by a conciliatory section in Major, singing the inseparable bond of the individual to the community, ahead of a powerful, rousing ending.
