GWYN ARCH (b. 1931)

has been composing and arranging music for choirs for a long time. His first arrangements were for the girls’ choir of the secondary school where his career in education began. When he moved into teacher-training he began writing for children and for student groups.

He then took over the conductorship of a large mixed voice choir in his home town and found it was often quicker to write an arrangement of a particular carol for the Christmas concert than track down an existing one. When he founded a male voice choir he quickly became aware of the dearth of suitable material for the men to sing, and so felt compelled to arrange for them.

In short, Gwyn has been working with, writing for and conducting every kind of choral combination for much of his life. He has published well over 200 choral arrangements with nearly all the major British publishers and they have been performed and broadcast all over the world.

CHRIS ARTLEY (b. 1963)

Born in Leeds, England, Chris Artley studied music at Bristol University specializing in composition under the guidance of Derek Bourgeois. Artley has spent 25 years teaching music in schools in the Great Britain and New Zealand, where he is now resident and teaches at King’s College, Auckland. He sings baritone with the “Graduate Choir of New Zealand” and is also a keen amateur jazz pianist. Chris Artley has written a number of choral compositions (a cappella and with instrumental accompaniment). With The Ashwell Carol he won the first prize in the “Amadeus Choir” of Toronto’s 2011 Seasonal Song-Writing competition, and with The Mock Turtle’s Song he also awarded the first prize in the Composition Competition of the “European Choral Association” in the frame of the festival “Youth Choirs in Movement”.

Since September 2003: editor for the publishing company Helbling (music department), furthermore editor of critical first editions (2013 German music editing prize “Best Edition” for the first editions of selected part songs for male voices by Anselm Hüttenbrenner) as well as of large-scale choral collections (e.g. Choir Book ROMANTIK a cappella in two volumes, together with Jan Schumacher), author of academic articles and papers on music, encyclopaedia entries and texts for concert programs; talks.

His compositions include sacred and secular choral music (published by Helbling), lieder, piano music and chamber music. Numerous choral works have seen successful performances in Europe and beyond: For example, his Missa anima integra, for example, was performed in Namibia on 31 August 2014, as part of the service celebrating the diamond jubilee of the Kantorei Swakopmund. On 30 December 2016, in the “Echoes of the Season” concert, Beena David & friends gave a performance of his a-cappella arrangement of the Bach/Gounod setting of Ave Maria in the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. And on 7 May 2017, his Murauer Festmesse (Murau Celebratory Mass) could be heard at the festival of the Deanery of Raron-St. German in Switzerland, where it was sung by more than ten choirs simultaneously, involving a total of 360 singers.
Michael Aschauer is a regular guest at first performances of his works at a range festivals and events, among them, the “Murau International Music Festival” directed by the Canadian conductor Zane Zalis (2015 with The Wind at Dusk, 2013 with Trust in the Lord), and “BeispielsWeisen – New choral music from Upper Austria” (2015 with Love cannot be restrained, 2013 with Sleep, Little Baby). In the 2010 competition for composers at the “2nd Upper Valais International Alpine Choir Festival” in Brig, Switzerland, his choral piece Le clocher chante (The church tower sings) was awarded with the 1st prize and first performed by the European Chamber Choir of Cologne. In the same year, he gained the 2nd prize in the competition for composers held to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Choral Society of Upper Swabia 1885 e.V. for his choral piece Nächtliche Szene (Nocturnal Scene).
The “Vienna Chamber Choir” recorded several of his choral compositions and choral arrangements on CDs: the a-cappella arrangements of the Christmas Pastorals by Corelli and Manfredini as well as the composition Newborn Jesus at the CD of the same title (2013), Auf den Herrn vertrauen (Trust in the Lord) at the CD “O crux” (2014) and Glory to Music based on Scriabin at the CD “1900 – Choral Music between Romanticism and the Modern Era” (2017).

Josef Bernhard

Josef Bernhard studied church music and experimental composition at the “Claudio Monteverdi” Conservatory in Bolzano, Italy. In addition, he attended numerous advanced education courses and master classes, for example, summer courses at the Riva del Garda, a three-year “Laboratorio permanente nuova musica” and the Darmstadt summer school for new music.

Josef Bernhard’s œuvre catalog comprises compositions for symphonic orchestra, concert band, chamber ensembles of various instrumentation, piano and choir. Several of his works have been awarded prizes at national and international competitions, e.g. Tönen der Erde for six-part mixed choir (1st prize) and Salamandra – concert music for brass orchestra (3rd prize). Josef Bernhard has received composition commissions through various vocal and instrumental groups including the South Tyrol Choral Society, the Association of Artists, the South Tyrol Association of Church Choirs and the Tyrol Choral Association.

Bernhard is the organist in his home town of Wangen; from 1992 to 1997 he was musical director of the music band Wangen. Since 1999 he has been teaching the subjects music theory, rhythm and ear training at the Monteverdi Conservatory in Bolzano, Italy.

Pieter Bezuidenhout is one of South Africa’s most prominent young composers; bridging the gap between the older and the younger generation of composers. For his choral work Stardance he has received the award in composition from the European Academy of Choral Conductors. Bezuidenhout is regularly commissioned locally as well as internationally to write works for ensembles ranging from instrumental chamber groups to festival choirs. His works have been performed in Washington, Bratislava, Istanbul, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore. Bezuidenhout’s choral works are regularly chosen as prescribed works for South African choral competitions.

ERIK BOSIO (b. 1983)

is a young musician from Genoa. He started his formal music training in piano at the age of 6 and turned his attention to composition when he was 15. He studied classical composition and jazz voice at the Niccolò Paganini Conservatory of Music of Genoa. He has been involved in the a cappella scene since 1996, when he founded his first vocal group Kream. Erik Bosio, Andrea Figallo, Letizia Poltini and John Kjøller form together The Ghost Files, a studio project dedicated to composing, arranging and recording vocal music of various genres. Bosio is also a member of Cluster, a multi-nominated vocal jazz group from Genoo, and the conductor of the Alfredo Casella choir (Novi Ligure, Italy).

Nanni Byl (read: biel) was born in Hanover and already showed great talent and love for music in her younger years. She received her first music instruction at the age of three, learning the recorder, violin, guitar, piano and viola. When she was five she began singing with the children’s choir, later also with the church choir and decided at the age of eleven to become a singer. She completed her degree in two courses of study: rhythmics in Hanover and jazz singing in Hilversum, The Netherlands.

She had her first band when she was sixteen; there were various projects until she launched the “Jazzquartett Nanni Byl” (“Jazz Quartet Nanni Biel”) in 1984. Thereafter, “Kammermusik und Jazz” (“Chamber Music and Jazz”) “Havana” (Salsa), “Big Women” (Soul/Blues) “S(w)inging Jazz” followed. In 1995 she founded “Ladies NYGHT”.

Nanni is a lecturer for jazz at the University in Mainz (Germany), teaches privately and gives workshops in the areas of jazz choir, gospel, solo singing, improvisation, rhythmics/groove, vocal coaching and piano accompaniment.

Núria Giménez Comas began her musical studies with the piano but already with the idea of studying composition. After two years of studying mathematics, she entered the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya (ESMUC) and studied instrumental and electroacoustic composition with the composer Christophe Havel. The work with electroacoustic music changed her way of thinking about instrumental music with a deep reflection on the notion of timbre in music. At the ESMUC she also attended seminars with composers as Michael Levinas, Helmut Lachenmann, Lasse Thoressen and others.

Núria Giménez Comas enjoyed a period of training at the Geneva Conservatory for two years. There she studied composition with Luis Naon and electroacoustic and instrumental composition with Michael Jarrell especially in deepening harmony and instrumentation. She also teaches tools for music mixed with real time electronics (Max5) with Eric Daubresse. Moreover she has the opportunity of playing mixed and acousmatic pieces (multichannel). She worked with the composer Mauricio Sotelo and finished her Bachelor’s degree in Barcelona with her final treatise on the application of mathematics in the process of composition. This year she also served in multidisciplinary projects in Barcelona in connection with dancing and painting.

Núria Giménez Comas has been studying for her Master’s degree in “Mixed Composition” at the Joint High School in Geneva where she takes classes with Michael Jarrell, Luis Naon and Eric Daubresse. She has participated in the Académie of Villecroze where she has worked with Klangforum musicians like Annette Bik, Andreas Lindenbaum and Mathilde Horsiangou. In addition, she has worked with Harry Sparnaay, Jean-Pierre Dupuy, BCN216, the ensemble Contrechamps, the Chamber Orchestra of Geneva and others.

Núria Giménez Comas has recently published pieces in the Catalan publishing company Periferia Music and was awarded the International Composition Prize Eulalio Ferrer in Mexico and the EACC Choral Composition Award. She has been selected to attend the “Ircam: Cursus” next year.

Jörg Edelmann was born on 23 January 1963 in Esslingen am Neckar; he graduated from high school in Augsburg. There he also studied music as part of the curriculum of teaching at the junior high school level. After eight years as a teacher he switched to the University at Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in 2001, where he has since been working as a music educator in teacher training. His responsibilities include directing the big band and the a cappella group at the university.
Jörg Edelmann has been fascinated with the musical possibilities of the human voice since his early years at school. A number of arrangements and compositions for various a cappella settings have been composed, especially in the areas of pop music, hits and folk songs. The pieces have been tried out in concert and are also performed in workshops.
The author would like to reach as many people as possible with his interpretations - often spiced with a sense of humor - and to spread the joy of a cappella singing.

was born in Munich and studied the organ (under Franz Lehrndorfer) and Church Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts there. He continued his studies in Paris under Marie Claire Alain. He was awarded a scholarship by the German National Academic Foundation, and won prizes in a variety of national and international performance competitions in Munich. In 1979, he was awarded the Förderpreis für Musik (prize for promising young musicians) of the State of Bavaria and in 1983 won the internationally renowned Improvisation Competition in Haarlem in the Netherlands.

In 1978, Feller took up a temporary teaching position at Munich’s University of Music and Performing Arts. This was followed in 1980 by a position as lecturer at the Academy of Catholic Church Music and Music Teaching in Regensburg, where he remained until 1983, when he was offered a professorship in Munich at the University of Music and Performing Arts. Since his appointment he has supervised his own organ class there. His artistic and educational work is complemented by his numerous concerts in Europe, the USA and South Korea, CD recordings (Grand Prix international du disque Liszt) radio productions and film music (Brother of Sleep). The broad spectrum of his talent extends beyond the purely instrumental, as is clearly reflected in his activities as a choir director and composer. In addition to organ, orchestral and chamber music, choral music (with and without orchestral accompaniment) is a major element in his compositional work. Born in Linz in Upper Austria, multiple degrees as an academic, professor and, as the monastery music director, responsible for all the musical interests of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Schlägl. He has worked as a conductor and organist in nearly every country in Europe as well as in Morocco, has played for radio and television and has made a name for himself with over 60 CDs and records.

As a composer and improviser he is a member of several international commissions; his compositions have been published by renowned publishing companies. He has published numerous articles as a musicologist and has participated in many symposiums. Assistant professor at the University Salzburg in the subjects of musicology and liturgical sciences as well as at the University for Music and the Performing Arts Vienna for performance practice and improvisation; furthermore, conductor of the Oratorio Choir Cantoria Plagensis and director of the Provincial Music School in Schlägl.

Frieberger has been awarded numerous prizes and has received various tributes already in his younger years, including:

Uli Führe (b. 1957)

Born in 1957 in Lörrach, Germany, graduated in 1987 in Music Teaching in Schools (main subject: Violin, special subject: Singing) and Popular Music (main subject: Guitar); he lives in Buchenbach, near Freiburg.
One of the focal points of Führe’s compositional work is vocal music. With texts by selected authors including Robert Gernhardt, Mascha Kaléko, Ringelnatz, Morgenstern, Tucholsky, Busch and Wolf Biermann’s translations of Shakespeare’s sonnets, but also with sacred texts, he creates a bridge between lyric poetry and music.

His many-sided compositions have long since found their way into the work of choirs and into practical everyday singing. For his children’s songs Kroko Tarrap, he was nominated for the Leopold the prize awarded for good music for children by the German association of music schools for young people. His jazz canons are a firm feature of songbooks and choir books both at home and abroad.
In addition to his work as a composer, he teaches independent courses in the fields of vocal training for choir directors and music teachers, and singing education for educators and schoolteachers. He has held courses in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Luxemburg, France, The Netherlands, Lithuania, Iceland and Brazil. His books on vocal training, Stimmicals 1 and 2, today have a permanent place in modern vocal work.

Between 1992 and 1998 he received a number of commissions to teach music at institutions in Stuttgart, Freiburg and Basle, and since 1997 he has been teaching Improvisation at the University of Music in Freiburg.

In 2007, in Berlin, he was awarded the German record critics annual prize for his CD Ikarus, which combines contemporary composition and improvisation with the lyrical verse of Markus Manfred Jung.

His many-sided publications include children’s songs, musicals for children, teaching works on warm-up exercises for multiple voices, jazz canons, choral scores, CDs etc.

Born in Berlin, Carsten Gerlitz studied Music at Berlin University of the Arts, and Computer Science at the Free University. He received his musical education on the piano and in composition and arrangement from, among others, Clemens Kühn and Heinrich Riethmüller. He currently works as a musician, arranger and author for a number of different publishers and labels. His piano and choir arrangements have now appeared in over 150 publications, and he directs spoken-word and musical productions in his own sound-recording studio.

With his choir “The Happy Disharmonists”, which he has directed for 23 years, Carsten Gerlitz has won Berlin’s BONZO cultural prize and released several CDs. In 2006, his publication POP BALLADS won him the BEST EDITION award of the German Music Publishers Association. He has frequently acted as musical director for the television broadcasters SAT.1, ZDF and RTL, worked as musical director of Berlin’s Schlosspark and Tribune Theatres, and directed the Palazzo Show in the capital. He has also been involved in several musical projects with the Stageentertainment company.

Carsten Gerlitz has done arrangements for Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra, Reinhard Mey, Ute Lemper, Pepe Lienhard, for the NDR and MDR radio orchestras, and also for the children’s choir of the MDR. In addition, he is in regular demand as a lecturer in Choir Direction.

FRANZ M. HERZOG (b. 1962)

Conductor, composer and music educationalist. He studied composition and choral conducting at Graz University of Music and Performing Arts (KUG). Postgraduate studies with Eric Ericson (Stockholm).

In 1994 Herzog founded CANTUS, an ensemble specializing in contemporary music. He is artistic director of the chamber choir Vocalforum Graz and of the Styrian youth choir CantAnima. With all of these ensembles achieved numerous international successes.

Franz Herzog is internationally active as a conductor and composer and as an expert for choral conducting and choral voice training. He is currently head of choral conducting department at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory in Graz and a lecturer at KUG. Furthermore he was one of the artistic directors of the 5th World Choir Games 2008 and the World Choir Championships in 2011.

As a composer, Herzog has published numerous choral works through the Austrian publisher Helbling. His Ave, maris stella won him second prize in the 2010 “Goldene Stimmgabel” (Golden Tuning fork) international competition for composers held by AGEC. For his achievements, he was awarded the merit prize of the Federal Ministry of Science and Research.

Martin Jaunich

Martin Jaunich, born in Cottbus, Germany in 1983, received his musical instruction in piano and percussion at the local conservatory. He studied music education at the University of Potsdam. Jaunich lives in Berlin and works as an arranger of vocal music and also as an instrumental teacher. He is a keen chorus member with extensive experience as a choral director. First educated in classical composition, his interest shifted with time towards pop and jazz. Thus, he often combines the best of both worlds in his arrangements.

Kalmer is the director of the jazz choir of the Academy of Music and Drama in Munich. He conducts regular workshops on rock, jazz and crossover in the choir, is active as a juror and works for numerous publishers as an arranger, composer and editor.

JEAN KLEEB (b. 1964)

Jean Kleeb was born in Santo André in Brazil in 1964 and studied composition, conducting and music education at the University of São Paolo. He has been living in Germany since 1991 and works as a choral director, music pedagogue, pianist, composer and arranger. His works for choir, piano and ensembles range from modern music to World Music and have been published by numerous publishing houses. Mr. Kleeb is a lecturer, choral director, vocal trainer and was workshop director at the universities in Giessen and Dortmund in Germany. In 2011 he was an advisor for world music at the in Dortmund. Jean is the music director of the Marburg Castle Festival. As a choral director Jean Kleeb focuses on contemporary works and oratorios from all over the world, including crossover of jazz, modern and ethno music in secular choral music. He has a particularly strong commitment to merge secular and sacred European choral music with various cultures, such as those of Latin America, North Africa and Asia.

Composer/arranger, song writer, pianist and beatboxer. Born and raised in Remstal near Stuttgart, Germany. He first studied church music and is now studying music education at the Franz Liszt School of Music in Weimar, Germany.

He has composed and arranged for the jazz choirs VOCompany and Voice It, the chamber choir of the Franz Liszt School of Music in Weimar, the True Note Big Band in Weimar as well as the Junge Musiktheater Leipzig (the Youth Theater of Leipzig), to name but a few.

In addition, he has been working in improvisational theater, silent films and choral workshops and he holds beatbox workshops for schools, choirs and teachers. Together with Indra Tedjasukmana he wrote the textbook “Beatbox Complete” which won the German music edition prize.

is an honours graduate of the University of Wales. After taking a Certificate in Education at Bristol University he stayed in the South West and quickly gained a fine reputation for his music teaching both in and out of the classroom. Used to large-scale and high-profile performances, his school choirs were regularly invited by the BBC to feature in both TV and Radio programmes, while he was also much sought after as a conductor of adult choral, operatic, and instrumental groups in the city of Bristol. On his return from a year as Choral Director in an American High School, where incidentally he gained experience of working with jazz bands, he further developed his skills as a composer and arranger for choral groups. Members of his personally coached choirs and string quartets, as well as his private singing pupils, have, over the years, and to this day, won scholarships to various colleges of music. After a distinguished school teaching career, he became an examiner in all instruments and voice for Trinity College, London in the early 90’s, examining in New Zealand, Malaysia and France as well as all over the UK. By this time he was already in demand as an adjudicator for Music Festivals of the British Federation. Founder Director of the Bristol Cathedral Girls’ Choir from 1993- 2002, he then taught for three years in The Bristol Academy of Performing Arts which specialises in the training of students for the Musical Theatre. Here he lectured again on ensemble technique, as well as preparing students for individual diploma examinations in Music Theatre. He is often asked to use his teaching expertise in choral situations by taking adult workshops for both Operatic and Choral societies. A member of the Association of Teachers of Singing and the Association of British Choral Directors, (for which organisation he has acted as Artistic Adviser), he directed the national award-winning Bristol Schools’ Chamber Choir from 1993-2008. Based at his home in Clevedon, Somerset, he is now best known perhaps for his work in the training of young singers. He has a busy private teaching practice and in recent years has become recognised as an authority in ‘upper-voice’ choral technique. Recent Publications include three sets of arrangements for upper voices in Faber Music Choral Programme Series, and by Lindsay Music, three folk song arrangements, and original compositions, also for upper voices. He has always been a keen sportsman, cricket and golf being his special interests.

Manfred Länger (born 1968) teaches choral conducting, conducting, choral singing and voice training at the Diocesan Conservatory for Church Music in Vienna as well as cultural workshops, music and choir at a Viennese Junior High School and High School. He writes concepts for music communication and he even appears onstage as a moderator and actor (for example, “Von der Alm bis zum Fjord” (2005) and since 2009: “witness” – a dance, choral music, performance project on the topic of human rights). As a lecturer in the areas of choral conducting, ensemble singing and voice training he teaches at various institutions (Mozarteum Salzburg, teacher training colleges) and at renowned courses in Austria (vocal week St. Gerold, Musikfabrik Edelhof …).
Manfred Länger’s compositional activities are portrayed in various ways: on the one hand, those “crazy, rhythmically organized spoken theater pieces” that since the 2002 World Symposium for Choral Music in Minneapolis are standards in the repertoire of various choirs (Vienna Chamber Choir, company of music, ...), and on the other hand, also “serious”, often sacred choral music for institutions such as Styria cantat, Philharmonie Luxembourg and europa cantat 2012 in Turin (children’s opera Cello Rising), the Austrian National Youth Choir 2015 and the Choral Competition in Spittal/Drau in 2016.

Lorenz Maierhofer’s music has been published in a range of international choral editions and on numerous CDs. His creative work spans musical styles from contemporary and classical music to ethno, folk, gospel and jazz.

After 25 years as a teacher of music, practising musician and lecturer in the didactics of music and choral education, Lorenz Maierhofer has dedicated himself since 2002 entirely to composition.

He lives and works as a creative artist in Kirchberg an der Raab, Styria, Austria.

Born in Genoa, Letizia Poltini has been playing piano since she was 6. In 2007 she completed her Piano degree at the Niccolò Paganini Conservatory of Music of Genoa. Very experienced soprano in different choral formations she is now working as accompa-nying pianist for lied and opera singers. She has been conducted by the renowned Daniel Oren in a rendition of the Carmen at the Carlo Felice Theatre in Genoa. Poltini is a founding member of the multi-nominated group vocal jazz group Cluster, and, besides Andrea Figallo, Erik Bosio and John Kjøller, member of The Ghost Files, a studio project dedicated to composing, arranging and recording vocal music of various genres. Poltini composes for this ensemble and records all female parts.

Composer Franco Prinsloo creates in a diverse variety of styles including choral, classical, contemporary, new music, cabaret and theatre as well as pop music and electronica. He has composed and directed extensively for the stage including Kind(s) (2015), CODE(2015) and Mosioua (2016) to name but a few highlights. For the past three years he has been the Musical Director for the Nedbank Arts and Culture Trust performing arts Scholarships. He is an active composer in the new music scene in South Africa including The Horizons Project choir and the Paz Consort. Prinsloo is commissioned by prominent choirs. His choral piece Pula, Pula! (from his musical Naledi – an African journey) was commissioned by the NWU PUK Arts for The King’s Singers to be performed in their programme in 2017. His compositions are frequently chosen as prescribed works at choral competitions.

Franz Rieder

Born in 1942 in Collepietra (South Tirol, Italy), Franz Rieder comes from a musical family that has been dedicated to the cultivation of music for many generations. It is thus no wonder that he was an ardent musician and singer already in his younger years. He studied church music with Prof. Josef Knapp, cathedral director of music Angelo Alverà, cathedral organist Alfons Frontull and canon Steiner at the school for church music in Brixen. Subsequently he completed an education as conductor in Innichen with Prof. Otto Ulf, Sepp Tanzer, Haase-Altendorf and Prof. Josef Ertl. In 1965 Rieder took over the direction of the wind ensemble in Jenesien (near Bolzano) and in 1968 he switched to the wind ensemble Soprabolzano which he conducted till 1990. In addition, he succeeded as conductor after the death of his uncle, Matthias Rieder, in his hometown of Collepietra in 1966. Franz Rieder is an organ, keyboard and accordion teacher at his own private music school in Bolzano. His compositional oeuvre encompasses primarily music for brass instruments and sacred choral music. In 2012, for his achievements he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the region Tyrol.

studied the guitar at the Hochschule für darstellende Kunst und Musik (Academy of Music and the Performing Arts) in Frankfurt/Main, and from 1995 to 1998 held a teaching commission in the Music Teaching Department of Frankfurt’s Johann Wolfgang Goethe University.

As the founder and leader of the vocal jazz quartet Finally Four and director of the Wiesbaden based pop jazz choir Sing’n’Swing, Schäfer has dedicated himself to a broad spectrum of modern music. In addition, he has enriched the repertoire with his own highly imaginative and stirring choral arrangements, and in workshops together with, among others, Darmon Meader (New York Voices), Roger Letson (Vocal Flight) and Clare Fisher, he is continually and deeply involved with the latest trends in jazz and pop.

studied Music Teaching in Schools, Jazz and Popular Music, and English in Stuttgart. Since graduating, she has been working as a freelance musician. She is an arranger, composer, jazz and gospel singer, choir director (at the GoVocal school for pop singing with its affiliated choirs Sixties in Motion, Gospelchor and the VocaLadies jazz choir) and leader of the award-winning a-cappella quartet Salt Peanuts, with which she performs her own cabaret chansons.

Early encounters with music (piano and organ studies with Josef Monter, among others) launched Alwin Michael Schronen (born on December 19, 1965 in Daleiden, Germany) onto the path to music at an extra early age. What’s more, he follows this path with his entire soul. After studies at the Episcopacy Catholic Church Music School with Professor Klaus Fischbach in the German town of Trier he gained additional experience at the Saar University of Music. His studies of organ with Professor Wolfgang Rübsam and conducting with Professor Andreas Göpfert reinforced his love of music and reinforced him in composing endeavors of his own. The focus of his compositional activity which began in 1990 is focused on sacred and secular a cappella choral music. In 2012 he won 2nd prize at the International Composition Competition of the Choral Society in North Rhine-Westphalia. Two years later he received an award for his composition POWER OF NATURE in the competition “Call for Scores” at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. In 2015 he won the 1st prize at the Valentin Eduard Becker composer’s competition at Bad Brückenau (Bavaria). In the same year several of his works were premiered as commissioned works (in Limburg, Cologne, Wiesbaden and Giessen). In the international scene his works have been performed in the United States, Japan, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Ukraine amongst others. His works are compulsory choral works within the scope of choral competitions, master choir performances and concertante choral singing.

Alwin Michael Schronen is a composer who composes with plenty of soul, love and expression. He lends enormous intensity and extraordinary depth to his compositions and thus the texts which he sets to music are unbelievably lively and spirited. His opus comprises over 150 choral works, wind quartets, six masses and one passion.

Sebastian Schwab

Sebastian Schwab was born in Munich in 1993. At the age of five he received his first violin lessons and began composing autodidactically. He was a young student of composition with Prof. Kay Westermann as well as for violin at the Munich Academy of Music. At present he is studying composition with Prof. Jan Müller-Wieland and also violin. His oeuvre includes works for solo instruments, for voice and piano, for chamber ensembles as well as works for orchestra and choir. His music was performed, for example, as part of the “Young Soloist Concerts” of the Siemens Music Foundation and at the International “aDevantgarde Festival” in Munich in 2013. In 2012 he received a commission from Schott/Wergo to compose a piano lieder cycle based on 13 melodies by the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. This work was premiered in 2013 and will appear printed as well as recorded at Schott/Wergo. For this project, in 2013 Schwab received the Leonhard and Ida Wolf Memorial Award of the city of Munich.

In concert he performs as a violinist, pianist, violist, organist and conductor: 2013 he directed, for example, the operita “Maria de Buenos Aires” by Astor Piazzolla in the Theatre Academy “August Everding”.

Born in Hartberg in the Austrian province of Styria, Johannes Steinwender completed his studies at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Graz in 1993, when he was awarded the degree of Magister artium with distinction. He is now teaching there as an assistant professor of Theory of Music in the Institute of Composition, Theory of Music, History of Music, and Conducting. In addition to his music teaching activities and his work as an editor and author of guides to musical works, he is an active choir director, conductor and composer.

Choral singing, which was one of his first points of contact with classical music, remains today one of the most important areas of Steinwender’s activities. Since 1990 he has been artistic director of the Church Music Society in Hartberg, and has made a name for the choir beyond the borders of Styria. As choir director and conductor, he has made guest appearances with the first performances of new works at important festivals such as styriarte and steirischer herbst (Styrian autumn). At present he is the musical director of the following choirs and ensembles: the choir and orchestra of the Hartberg Church Music Society, Scholae Musici Cantores, the Weiz Children’s Choir, the Weiz Youth Choir and the aerophonic Ensemble.

Born in Ebene Reichenau in the Austrian province of Carinthia, Hans Unterweger was educated at the classical grammar school in Tanzenberg, and received his teaching degree in English and Music at the Catholic University College of Education in Graz-Eggenberg. He is a music teacher and coordinator for music at the Musikhauptschule (musical comprehensive school) in Kirchberg an der Raab, Styria, and composes, arranges and sings for the a-cappella group VOICE|factory. Married, with two grown-up sons, he lives in Kirchberg an der Raab with two cats and a Dalmatian called Phoenix.

Martin Völlinger was born in Fulda, Germany in 1977. Initially self-taught, he studied church music, voice, conducting and improvisation in Regensburg as well as in Zurich and attended numerous international music courses. He was a prize winner at the first Bayreuth-Regensburg Choral Direction Competition and was a finalist at the International Organ Improvisation Competition at Schlägl Monastery in Austria.

He worked as a choral director, voice coach and organ teacher with the Regensburg Domspatzen and as an assistant to the cathedral organist already during his studies. After his studies he answered the call of a Croatian bishop to establish the cathedral music, that is, the church music in the region of his newly founded bishopric.

Since 2007 Völlinger has been working as the choral director and voice teacher with the Lucerne Boys’ Choir where he has celebrated astounding success as the director of the Men’s Ensemble of the Boys’ Choir (the youngest men’s choir in Switzerland). He now lives with his family in Ebikon, near Lucerne. Besides his work with the Lucerne Boys’ Choir, he is the organist in Steinhausen and Baar in the Canton of Zug.

Martin Völlinger is a versatile musician and crossover artist. His increasingly freelance compositorial activities are reflected in numerous commissioned works, including the oratorio Inspired – Trauermusik d-Moll (Inspired - Mourning Music in D minor) for the Handel-Festival-Lucerne 2009 in memory of children killed in religious conflicts as well as a humorous cantata Der Ohrwurm (The Earworm) for the Austrian vocal ensemble Vocale Neuburg. In December 2011 his commissioned cantata Schweizerreise (Swiss Journey) was successfully world-premièred for the Tag der internationalen Freiwilligentätigkeit (International Voluntary Service Day 2011) in the SWISS CHRISTMAS tent city in Zürich. In March 2012 his musical “Gimmu di butzi” for the singing school “cantiamo” in Oberwallis was a huge success with the public. This project was awarded the Lily Waeckerlin Prize for Jugend&Musik 2001 by the ACCENTUS foundation.

Völlinger aims his music directly at people and their feelings, between traditional and modern music and shows no reservation in the use of pop, jazz and world music. Increasingly, he has turned his attention to music theater and is always looking for new ideas and forms situated between opera, musical comedy and the musical. His musical work is rounded out by his activity as a seminar instructor and consultant.
